FSWS employees attend a session on smart use of energy, by Enemalta
Tuesday, March 30, 2010
30 staff members form the Foundation for Social Welfare Services on Friday attended a session on smart use of energy, delivered by Enemalta Engineers Sylvana Scicluna and Alexandra Meli at the Marsa Power Station. This initiative, which forms part of Enemalta’s Corporate Social Responsibility agenda, was attended by FSWS staff who works in the Agencies’ various services and settings. In turn, they will then pass on the information to their colleagues, thus promoting smart use of energy and helping the Foundation move towards its green goals.
Agencies Appogg, Sapport and Sedqa within the Foundation operate more than 45 different services, including various residential programmes and day services. Thus, practical ideas on the efficient use of energy can be applied while not compromising the quality of the services provided. Staff attending had a thorough explanation on the energy consumption of various appliances operable in both home and work environment. Very valid and practical tips were shared, and the participation and interest of attendees peaked during the question time, where over 40 questions were put forward to Enemalta Engineers who dealt with each question in detail, such as office electronic equipment consumption and best ways how to minimize the amount of energy consumed; the installation of motion detectors to switch off unoccupied rooms / offices; avail of task lighting – instead of lightning up the whole working area; water heaters usage in residences; the installation of passive cooling systems such as solar films; and avail, when possible, of natural ventilations, etc.
The FSWS is committed towards ensuring efficient consumption of energy. As part of its green strategies, the Foundation also appointed a green leader; facilitates waste separation within its various units and offices; uses energy-saving light fittings where possible; promotes green tips in its monthly internal newsletter; and constantly explores possibilities on how to make the best use of energy.
