Strategy Day held for staff of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services

The local social welfare services and how they fit in the European dimension, and lateral thinking using the six thinking hats, set the main agenda for the Stategy Day held today for staff members of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services. This event was officially opened by Hon. Dolores Cristina, Minister for Education, Employment and the Family. The Foundation, , incorporates Agenzija Appogg, Agenzija Sedqa and Agenzija Sapport, which offer a wide spectrum of services in various fields related to children, the family, addictions and disability.

Ms. Sina Bugeja, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation addressed the staff, referring to challenges being faced by the services. Over the past months, all the services offered by the Agencies were evaluated – an excercise which served to highlight pertaining issues and put into perspective the way forward for the Foundation. For this, the Foundation will be adapting the six thinking hats programme mainly to initiate the process by addressing issues related to inter and intra agency collaboration; supporting service users in achieving their potenital through better service provision; listening and addressing employees’ needs; and maximising on the resources available. These issues were all tackled today during discussion and training groups following a plenary on lateral thinking by Mr. Joe Woods, CEO of the World Centre for New Thinking.

During the, Strategy Day members of staff also attended a plenary given by Dr. Vanni Xuereb, Head of MEUSAC. Dr. Xuereb referred to the shared competencies within the social welfare field between the EU member states, further strengthened by new provisions about social policy within the Treaty of Lisbon, which puts emphasis on employment, the fight against social exclusion, adequate social protection, high level of education, and anti-discrimination.  

The Foundation employs around 700 employees, most of whom are graduates in social sciences, staff within the medical profession, and support workers in residential settings. The Foundation also facilitates voluntary work and has a number of programmes that are run by volunteers.
