Carnival event for persons with a disability
Monday, February 15, 2010
Around 250 persons with a disability attending the Day Services within Agenzija Sapport, this morning celebrated Carnival together at the Basketball Pavilion in Ta’ Qali. This yearly event, supported by Hbieb tal-Agenzija Sapport (Friends of Agency Sapport), included various activities involving both the clients and the staff members such as performances by the Day Services’ Percussion Band; dances organized by different Centres; as well as various competitions including costumes, masks and floats competitions. All activities, including the costumes, masks and floats exhibited, were all produced by the clients themselves, with the help of the dedicated support workers within the Day Services. This event also included entertainment by Look Star Dancers and Siggiewi Residential Home Wheel Chair Dancing, and was concluded by a Carnival Ball for clients and staff members.
Trophies were given to the best mask, best float and best costume, and first and second runner-ups, in their respective categories. Agenzija Sapport would like also to thank Hbieb tal-Agenzija Sapport, which participated actively in the organization of the activity and constantly provides its support towards the Agency and its clients. Thanks also go to Mr. Narcy Calamatta who volunteered to compere the event.
Such initiatives are held regularly throughout the year, intended to improve social integration of the service users by socializing with clients from the 9 different Day Centers, and participating also in the coordination and preparations of such events. These Centres are located in Paola, Santa Venera, Hal Far, Fleur de-Lys, M’Scala, Swatar, Birgu and 2 at Imtarfa. The aim of the day programmes is both to assist persons with a disability developing their potential as well as giving support to their family thus permitting persons with a disability to continue living within the community. This helps in the integration process of persons with a disability within society and thus also giving them more independence.
