Frequently Asked Questions

BulletDay Services

Q : Who can apply?
A : Persons who are over 18 years of age and have multiple disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, or the latter on its own.

Q :  How can someone apply for a Day Service?
A : One must first contact the SAPPORT Social Work Services. The person will be supplied with all the necessary information and directed accordingly. Referrals requesting Day Services will be presented to the Services Department of the Day Services. These referrals are reviewed for allocation of service and listed in a waiting list, where applicable.

Q : Are such services against payment?
A : The Day Services, including all the needed transportation and daily snack during winter hours, are provided free of charge.

Q : How is the family of the service user involved?
A : Once a comprehensive assessment of the person with a disability is done, and the needs identified, the individual is directed to the necessary services. The assessments are carried out by a multi-disciplinary team, which not only involves the individual, but also his/her relatives and a pool of professional staff who are involved in the daily life of the individual. It is of utmost importance that these persons are involved at all levels and in all stages of the preparation and the planning of this programme. Ultimatley, the Day Services are also aimed at supporting the families/carers of persons with a disability so that they can continue living within the community without being socially isolated, thus empowering them to live independently.

Q : Do Service users attend the Day Centre closest to home?
A : Each centre is attended by persons with a disability coming from various localities, not just from the area of the Day Centre. Allocation is done according to availibility. Once the service user is allocated and integrated within a service, s/he continues attending that particular centre thus no to disrupt his/her environment.

Q : What kind of support is given by the Day Centres?
A : The individual and personal needs, such as therapy, of each service user are seen to by support workers and other professional staff. Staff at the Day Centres also coordinate activities and facilitate skills development for all clients.
